It is hard to believe that Harry Potter came out 20 years ago. Since the day we were introduced to Hogwarts and the wizarding world so many people have had their lives touched, altered, and influenced because one brave women shared a simple story with the world. That simple story has given me along with countless others a sense of belonging inside a community of fans who believe in the power of magic.
J.K. Rowlings story is nothing short of magical when you look at her history. Struggling with depression, anxiety, and suicide she believed in the magic of words. That words could be pulled from a writer’s imagination like a memory, placed inside a Pensieve, and we the readers could plunge in and experience a world beyond our imagination and dreams.
I will forever be grateful to J.K. Rowling for sharing her story with me. For giving me a sense of belonging to the house of Slytherin, and helping me to once again believe in magic.
When Harry Potter was first introduced to the world I was late to the party. It was several years after that I began reading the books, but once I started I devoured them like a prisoner enjoying his final meal before execution. At the time I was driving a great deal for work, and so I listened to them via audio book. Jim Dale did a fantastic job narrating, and I found myself looking forward to long car drives so I could listen to chapter after chapter. I especially remember driving to Raleigh NC to perform at The NC Renaissance Fair. I was listening to The Deathly Hallows and actually cheered in my car when Molly Weasley said “That’s my daughter Bitch!”
Now 20 years after the publication of the first Harry Potter book I reflect on all the wonderful experiences I have had in my life that relate to it’s story. I have made friends because we shared a mutual love, and sometimes hatred for something involving Harry Potter. When I owned Geek and Gamer Fitness we did numerous workouts themed towards spells, quidditch, and Hogwarts Houses. I have ordered Slytherin tshirts, banners, and journals all proclaiming my Slytherin Pride.
The point is my life has been blessed all because of a simple, yet profound story that one women had the courage to share with the world. I hope that I too can someday have that same courage, as well as all the writers, dreamers, and creative people all over the world. If J.K. Rowling has taught us anything it is that OUR STORIES MATTER!
So with that said I have decided to revisit the magical world of Harry Potter and have the first book sitting next to me ready to be read. I look forward to once again being able to experience this story in all it’s magical wonder.
Thank you J.K. Rowling!
